The Andy Paul Sanchez Foundation, called the APS Foundation, was founded for one main purpose and that is to keep a light on Andy’s advocacy for underserved students in the South bay. His mentoring of “at risk” students and young athletes will continue through scholarships and other funding services. In order to provide these scholarships and services the Foundation needs your financial support.
Andy was instrumental in establishing what was to become a model for keeping at risk students in school. He was a major force in developing the “Learning Center” within the Sweetwater Union High School District. Andy’s program took students who were failing and gave them a second chance. The learning Center successfully graduates 9 out of 10 enrolled students. These students are all at risk of dropping out and not graduating. Andy was invaluable in establishing this platform at Sweetwater High School where he wrote the playbook for others to follow.
For those who may not have known Andy, he grew up in the South Bay community. Andy served as President of Castle Park Middle School ASB. He was a natural athlete and a member of the 1967 Pony League World Series Champions and was voted the most valuable series player. At Castle Park High School Andy was a star athlete lettering in three sports. He was the 1969 CIF Player of the Year. Andy went on to play football in college and in 1973 was named Cal Ploy’s MVP. After college, Andy played professional football in the World Football League alongside teammates like Larry Csonka, Jim Kiick, and Paul Warfield. You can find Andy’s name in the San Diego Hall of Champions.
Once Andy’s sports career ended, his life’s passion began as a teacher and coach at Sweetwater High School where his tenure there led to many heartfelt testimonials at his untimely passing from former students, associates, and athletes upon whom Andy made an indelible impression. One of Andy’s many famous sayings was “Work Hard and Good Things Happen”. That phrase embodies what the Foundation hopes to preserve for future generations of “at risk” students and struggling athletes. That saying also embodies Andy’s life and his legacy as a Coach and a Teacher.
Your Sponsorship or Donation will help ensure that Andy’s mission in life continues. The Andy Paul Sanchez Foundation, called the APS Foundation, is a tax deductible charity 501(c)(3) non profit public benefit corporation effective October 1, 2009 EID number 27-1167176.
